Touring the monuments of Passaic in 1967, Robert Smithson noted how walking on the bridge was like "walking on an enormous photograph that was made of wood and steel, and underneath the river existed as an enormous movie film that showed nothing but a continuous blank".
In Baldus' photograph of Pont du Gard (ca. 1861), the bridge itself becomes a section of a perforated film strip.
